About Jane

My journey began surrounded by animals, including dairy-cross goats, and was deeply influenced by my grandparent's self-sufficient lifestyle. I learned lessons about working with the land and animal care, thanks to my grandfather’s quiet guidance.

Life took its course with marriage, a child, and a career in the UK’s NHS. However, the unexpected loss of my grandfather due to heart disease and later my grandmother to Parkinson’s disease prompted a major life re-evaluation. I realised that the life I was providing for my son differed greatly from my own childhood experiences.

In the wake of these losses, I moved to New Zealand, a place my grandfather had always wanted to visit. Initially, I continued my career in the healthcare sector, but a sudden health crisis revealed a neurological disease that changed my mobility and life direction. Determined not to let this setback derail my goals, I embraced a new path on a lifestyle block with goats, poultry, sheep, and cattle.

My passion for goats blossomed as I delved into learning more about their care, driven by a desire to honor my grandfather’s teachings. Unexpectedly, a neighbor’s buck led to my first goat breeding experience by myself, rapidly accelerating my education in goat husbandry. As my interest in Nubians grew, I joined the NZDGBA and built a business, Deacon Farm, to support breeders, lifestyle block owners, and provide valuable services to the goat community.

My business has flourished, and I cherish the friendships formed with clients. I’m proud to be the president of the New Zealand Anglo-Nubians breeders club (NZAN) and am committed to reviving the unique traits of Anglo Nubians through careful selective breeding. Currently, my herd consists of 31 goats, with 17 does set to kid this season. I’m dedicated to improving the breed through classification and herd testing and am training to become a judge with a goal to become a classifier to further contribute to the goat community.

As a member of the New Zealand Veterinary Association and a certified microchip implanter, I am committed to ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare. Deacon Farm, named in honor of my late grandparents Bill and Kay Deacon, reflects the values they instilled in me. Their legacy inspires my work every day, and I hope they would be proud of the positive impact Deacon Farm has on both goats and people.
